I was speaking with a colleague the other day and she shared with me that she had only recently learned about coaching and it’s potential. She wished she had known about it earlier – as traditional psychotherapy and other support services weren’t quite cutting it for the challenge she was facing. As we were talking, I realized that many people probably don’t really know what coaching is all about. So , here we go….
Are you feeling stuck in your life or career? Are you about to embark on a new stage of life or coming out the other side of one? Do you feel you are lacking direction or clarity about how to proceed? Perhaps you’ve talked with a therapist, your friends or family but nothing is really helping? It’s possible that you need to try something different – an approach that believes that you are whole and not broken, and need some support in finding your own answers to your burning questions.
Coaching is a partnership that empowers people to move forward in their lives by becoming the leader of their own lives. By sorting out all of the hype and the opinions of others, we can connect with what is true for you. It’s amazing what happens when you start listening to the person who knows you best: YOU!
Partnering with a coach helps you to reconnect with yourself and your values. With a coach you can create a vision for your life and create the mental and emotional space for the vision to take flight. A coach can also help you to create the structure to achieve your goals and the accountability (and compassion) to keep you on your path. A coach is present to help you steer your course, offer observations and insights, listen deeply, reframe difficult experiences, make empowering requests, help you to accept ‘what is’ and also get you into action when appropriate.
Coaches generally work with clients for a defined amount of time – generally weekly in person or phone appointments for 3-6 months. Certified Coaches follow strict confidentiality practices and follow a code of ethics governed by the International Coaching Federation.
If you are looking for partnership to solve a challenge in your life right now, coaching might be for you. Amazing changes are possible with partnership. Often, what is stopping you from a achieving a goal is much different from what is actually stopping you. Once we identify and create awareness around a barrier, we can begin to move on.
